Questionnaire Response

Scott Gillingham - St. James

Why did you decide to run in the 2018 (Winnipeg Civic Election / School Board Election)?

I’m seeking re-election for city council to build upon the important work that was started in my first term. That work includes continued focus on investments in infrastructure (roads, sidewalks, active transportation network) and the servicing of the CentrePort employment lands.

In addition, there are many projects I helped to launch in my first term that I want to see through to completion, including the renovation and expansion of the St. James Civic Centre, the building of Kapyong Park and the transition to multi-year balanced budgeting.

What experience will you bring to complement your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee)?

I believe serving on council for one term has given me vital experience that will assist me to make an important contribution to council in my second term.

Having served as police board chair and finance chair during my first term has provided me insights and understanding that will be of great assistance to offering leadership on council during my second term.

What are some issues that you would like to stand for in your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee), and why are these issues important to you?

My second term priorities are continued investment in road, sewer and parks infrastructure (in St. James and across the city), the development of CentrePort, addressing the drug (meth) issue, implementing multi-year budgets and the completing local projects that were begun in my first term.

What is something that you appreciate about the (City of Winnipeg / the ward / the school ward or school division) you wish to represent?

St. James has a rich and proud history. My community is well-connected with many families having been in St. James for generations.

St. James is also home to 17 Wing of the Royal Canadian Air Force, the 3rd largest aerospace industry in Canada and hosts a vibrant international airport.

With the potential buildout of CentrePort, Red River Exhibition and Assiniboia Downs lands, St. James is poised for greater local development than has been seen in decades. This development will mean hundreds of jobs and important spinoff economic benefits.

Do you have any other comments regarding your candidacy?

I believe I am the candidate in St. James with the experience and leadership record on Council to best represent my community.
