Why did you decide to run in the 2018 (Winnipeg Civic Election / School Board Election)?

I am seeking RE-Election.

I have been a Trustee for the last four years: elected to the Board in 2014.

Over the past 4 years, I have been honoured to be part of a decision-making team that has realized innovative learning opportunities, programs and priorities.  Examples include:

• PTEC (Pembina Trails Early College) where students benefit from a combined high school education, post secondary experience and mentorship with industry professionals.  This is a new approach introduced by our Board to embrace the new ways and methods students learn.
• Standards for Success in Literacy (SSL) has been piloted in 6 schools throughout the Division.  Through the use of technology, this program uses computer tablets to study literacy and numeracy.  The program is in its early stages, but teachers have reported an increased enthusiasm and engagement toward learning.  When students strengthen their literacy skills the path to graduation is brighter.

Our 34 schools continue grow each year. I want to provide continuity in planning and programming to ensure Pembina Trail’s recognized excellence in academic and technical education programs continues in the next 4 years.

What experience will you bring to complement your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee)?

I bring the experience of a 30 year professional career in the Public Service at the Senior Management/Executive level.

As the former Director of Finance and Administration, for the Healthy Child Manitoba Office, I am proud to have contributed to a nationally recognized strategy of programs and services for Manitoba’s Children and Youth.

Prior to my career in child-centred public policy, I held the following positions:

• Director,  Arts and Cultural Industries Branch (Gov’t of Manitoba)
• Senior Provincial Adjudicator, Hearings Board (Gov’t of Ontario)
• Consumer and Corporate Affairs Officer,  Dept of Justice (Gov’t of NWT)

I am experienced in facilitating change, initiating new projects and ensuring programs are completed “on time” and “on budget”.

Our school division is facing unprecedented growth within the Waverley West sub-division.  My proven professional expertise in both project development and financial management, is an asset to the Division.

What are some issues that you would like to stand for in your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee), and why are these issues important to you?

The following are some of my top priorities:

1. I am eager to face the challenges within the education system as we shift into a “21st Century Learning Model” and prepare students for the future by providing flexible learning opportunities, rich in information and communication technology;
2. I endorse an Expectation of Learning: that by grade 8, all students in Pembina Trails will meet (or exceed) the circular standards in literacy and numeracy; and
3. I commit to continue to facilitate and expedite the building of planned schools in the Waverley West sub-division to decrease the current level of bussing (overcrowding and traffic disruption) experienced by neighbouring school catchment areas.
4. I will continue to balance decisions within an appropriate system of fiscal control and accountability. Every Trustee wishes to have an unlimited budget: but we can not overburden taxpayers through excessive increases.

What is something that you appreciate about the (City of Winnipeg / the ward / the school ward or school division) you wish to represent?

Pembina Trails School Division is acknowledged throughout the city as a leader in quality education. Recognizing that no individual teacher, program or school can meet the holistic of children, the Division embraces a collaborative approach across program areas.  This is how to achieve the best possible outcomes for our students.

I would be pleased continue in my role as Trustee, and continue to work with this dedicated team of professionals.

 

Do you have any other comments regarding your candidacy?

In February 2018, the Provincial Government announced significant changes to education funding and will be implementing a full review of the education system early in 2019.  I believe that “experience matters”.  In this election, more than ever, the Trustees making policy, program and financial decisions must have a clear understanding of the depth of the issues being reviewed.

I feel I bring a unique combination of qualification and experience un-matched by other candidates.

If re-elected, I will provide the time-commitment, proven financial experience and administrative leadership deserved of the Trustee position.
