Questionnaire Response

Janice Lukes - Waverley West

Why did you decide to run in the 2018 (Winnipeg Civic Election / School Board Election)?

As Councillor for the South Winnipeg – St Norbert ward from 2014-2018, I decided to run again because I want to continue the momentum on some very significant projects:

  • South Winnipeg Recreation Campus
  • Combatting Illegal Rooming Houses
  • Developer hand off – City take over of new developments
  • Optimizing the new Rapid Transit Corridor
  • Internal Operations / Governance Review (City Wide)

and I want to continue supporting the development of new communities and integration of residents into these growing communities.   I am also excited to be learning from more established communities that are new to the Waverley West ward.

What experience will you bring to complement your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee)?

I have gained four years of experience as a Councillor, when I look back on that experience alone – I know I can bring value to the role.

  • my background as a fund developer, former business owners, trails coordinator, BIZ executive director and parent provides me with valuable insight and experience to the role.

What are some issues that you would like to stand for in your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee), and why are these issues important to you?

Full details on these issues at www.VoteLukes.ca

Overhaul outdated governance model:

  • the City has not conducted a review of the governance model in 20 years and it is time.

Collaborate and develop a Strategic Plan of Priorities:

  •  The Strategic Plan would identify specific recommendations, actions and priorities. The Strategic Plan of Priorities acts as a clear statement to the Public, the Public Service and Councillors on what the focus will be for the term.

Optimize Operational Improvements:

  • I’ll be brutally honest – the dysfunction, and silo based operations of the internal workings of the City is costing taxpayers millions. The administrative operations of the City, in my opinion – need a complete overhaul.

Crime Reduction:

  • Working to address the roots of crime, increasing resident involvement in Crime Prevention, developing programs to build stronger communities.

Aligning Economic Development Agendas and Decisions:

  • Council must have a clear understanding of Economic Development Winnipeg (EDW), the Winnipeg and Manitoba Chamber of Commerce and the Province of Manitoba’s economic development goals –

Ensure winter snow removal of all sidewalks and pathways:

  • For the mental and physical well being of residents.

What is something that you appreciate about the (City of Winnipeg / the ward / the school ward or school division) you wish to represent?

I appreciate the tremendous cultural diversity and inclusionary communities that reside in the Waverley West ward.

Do you have any other comments regarding your candidacy?

I have been acclaimed as the first Councillor for the Waverley West ward – so while being acclaimed is a unique experience, I am a bit regretful my name won’t appear on the ballot !
