Questionnaire Response

Chris Sigurdson - Louis Riel - 2

Why did you decide to run in the 2018 (Winnipeg Civic Election / School Board Election)?

My parents were both teachers and I grew up around education issues. When my own kids started school I became interested in contributing to our education system by running for trustee. I was elected on my first try in 2010 and then re-elected in 2014. I decided to run again in 2018 because I believe that I still have a lot to offer. I believe that we are facing challenging times in public schools and that my experience, drive and leadership can make a difference.

What experience will you bring to complement your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee)?

I grew up in this ward and have lived here my whole life. I went to school here, Hastings and Dakota, before going on to the University of Winnipeg and the University of Manitoba to get my law degree. Now my own kids go to school here in MAG and CJS. At LRSD I have been a leader. I have been Policy Chair, Finance Chair, Vice Chair and now Chair of the board. I have deep experience in all areas of this community and this school board. I am passionate about LRSD and public education.

What are some issues that you would like to stand for in your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee), and why are these issues important to you?

I have been a strong voice for public education. My prioties are:

Safety-I have championed our Human Diversity Policy and our Stand Up to Bullying campaign. I believe every kid should feel safe and welcome in our schools. When we had a tragic accident at a crosswalk near one of our schools we listened to the community and increased crossing guards and crossing guard training along with other measures to increase student safety.

Literacy and Numeracy- I have championed our division’s focus on reading, writing and math so that our kids have the basic skills so they will be ready to expand their knowledge.

Arts and Sports- School is not just about reading and writing, we must promote healthy activities for our kids.

Equity- Our demographics are changing. We must ensure that every kid has an equal chance at success. A
I have championed our ASPIRE summer learning program, The ECHO Indigenous education program, family centres for refugee families and as chair I signed the Winnipeg Indigenous Accord on behalf of our board.

What is something that you appreciate about the (City of Winnipeg / the ward / the school ward or school division) you wish to represent?

I love St. Vital. My family has lived here for more than 60 years. I live with my family in a house that’s two blocks away from the house I grew up in, the house my mom still lives in. Representing my neighbours makes me very proud.

Do you have any other comments regarding your candidacy?

I have been a strong voice for public education in St. Vital and I hope to keep being that strong voice as your trustee!
