Why did you decide to run in the 2018 (Winnipeg Civic Election / School Board Election)?

My decision to run for School Trustee in St. James, Kirkfield- St. Charles ward is simply a natural progression of community involvement from the local day care board to parent and arts councils. My experience in working with these groups have helped to produce more effective, engaging care and enhanced educational environments. It is personally rewarding to work with others to see these changes manifest in the service of children in our community.

What experience will you bring to complement your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee)?

I have experience as a K-12 teacher and for two decades worked as a public high school teacher.  I am currently employed as a Correctional Educator; teaching federally incarcerated adults at Stony Mountain Institution. I hold a B.A., B.Ed., P.B.C.E., M.Ed. I was the recipient of Excellence in Teaching Award in the Province of Manitoba.

Additionally, I have a curriculum vitae repleate with professional workshops, co-cirricular coaching activities and philanthropic endeavours.

What are some issues that you would like to stand for in your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee), and why are these issues important to you?

The issues that are important to me are:

• Fiscal Responsibility: We all strive to live within our budgets; school systems should be no different.
• Strengthening Citizenship in Schools: Education also shapes and prepares people for citizenship; the importance of which cannot be overstated.
• Increase and improvement of effective communication between school and home: Parenting is enhanced by schools that connect with homes.
• Development and implementation of a divisional cell phone policy: We need to initiate the conversation on the use and utilizations of cell phones in our schools and to work to develop a framework of understanding around this technology. We are late to the dance- missed the bus on this one and cannot continue to proceed without a framework of understanding.

What is something that you appreciate about the (City of Winnipeg / the ward / the school ward or school division) you wish to represent?

I appreciate that there are educators who go beyond their collective agreements and curriculum frameworks to provide an enriching learning environment for the students of the school division. This is evidenced in the depth and breadth of programs and co-curricular activities offered which keep the youth of our community connected and engaged.

Do you have any other comments regarding your candidacy?

I’ve been grateful for the support and the kindness of the people that I’ve met in my neighborhoods; it has been both encouraging and moving.
