Questionnaire Response

Wally Welechenko - Transcona

Why did you decide to run in the 2018 (Winnipeg Civic Election / School Board Election)?

It’s all about timing

For every privilege that this life of affords, there is an equal sacrifice. And his life moves forward, sometimes we do not have the time to commit with kids and family taking priority.

My two daughters are now older and on their own.  One is married and just had a baby, and the other one is attending university, so now I have the time to commit to develop the future of our community and experience to bring significant value to the position.

I want to be able to make a difference. I want to be able to keep the vision, and do what’s best for the community in the city in mind. I want to be a team member that works towards it, with a voice that is confident at the table, while at the same time, listening and respecting others’ perspectives and opinions.

Transcona is a great place. I’m glad I was raised here, and I’m glad I raise my children here. It’s not broken but like anything else, it requires constant maintenance, and I would like to make sure that it keeps moving in a positive direction.

What experience will you bring to complement your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee)?

I have lived in Transcona  my whole life and I have owned my own company’s since the age of 20, Prior to that, my family has owned a variety of restaurants and hotels.  I grew up in the service industry so dealing with people and the problems that may arise, along with the abilities to solve them, is nothing new to me.  I look at things from a business perspective because that is how you make things run more efficiently.  To relate, for example, if you were to come into my restaurant, how do I make sure that you get the best service, the best food, the restaurant is clean, and if there something you don’t like and you tell me about it, how do I make sure that I fix it so you come back as a customer. Things seem to get lost from a political perspective.

For any relationship to work, there has to be honesty and communication. As your city Councillor, I am accountable to you. Your needs and concerns are important, and a knowledge of what is going on so that you have a better understanding of what is going on is essential.

What are some issues that you would like to stand for in your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee), and why are these issues important to you?

Throughout Transcona, every area has its specific needs.

I have always lived in Transcona,   and the Things that are important to you,   are important to me, and throughout Transcona, every area has its specific needs, whether it is South Transcona , Old Transcona, or the new developments.  Boulevards or driveways that have been ripped up by the city for other repairs, but never properly repaired or attended to.  Back lanes or streets In desperate need of repair but have only had a band aid fix, and even at that, was done improperly, wasting time and money. Boulevard maintenance and the beautification. Recreational or play parks for kids that are in some developments a necessity.  Dog Parks,    Green space,    The need for more and better Transit to some areas,    Crime and Safety,    Infrastructure,    Bike Routes,    A better, wiser use of the money being spent,    And above all else….Accountability.

These are all items that should be done without need for multiple phone calls to the city which are most times put aside or ignored.  As a Councillor, I would take the responsibility in making sure these concerns are met.

What is something that you appreciate about the (City of Winnipeg / the ward / the school ward or school division) you wish to represent?

The  sense of community and pride that Transcona has, is outstanding.  Maybe it was a different time when I grew up here, but the neighbourhood kids always got together and played until dark.  We always felt safe, and we always looked out for each other, similar to how the community pulls together now.  I want to make sure it stays that way.

Do you have any other comments regarding your candidacy?

I look forward to be able to listen to people and let them know that they have been heard.  I want to be able to build that trust between the people and the city, so that we can work together more efficiently and move forward.
