Questionnaire Response

Tim Johnson - Pembina Trails - 2

Why did you decide to run in the 2018 (Winnipeg Civic Election / School Board Election)?

We have a great school division and I enjoy being part of the solution.  I made a commitment to our community to ensure Pembina Trails offers a safe, vibrant and challenging learning environment for our students. In January 2019, the Province will be launching an education review which could change the way education is delivered throughout Manitoba and in Pembina Trails.  The review will have an impact on our community schools, the classroom and programming.

This next term will be challenging for many school divisions. Our Ward needs strong, experienced leadership on the Board of Trustees.  I am committed to maintaining my proven track record and I want to ensure our community is well represented during the upcoming education review.

What experience will you bring to complement your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee)?

I have the experience and proven track record of effectively working with parents, the Department of Education, and City Councillors (shared services) to ensure our schools have the necessary resources to offer the educational programming and services that meet community expectations.

With four children in Pembina Trails School Division (two graduated and two are completing high school) I have the opportunity to see the results and meet with parents, teachers, and administrators on an ongoing basis and understand the issues from all sides.

I stay connected and have served our community in a range of ways, including: Chair of the Board of Trustees (2014 – 2016); Governing Board Member – Winnipeg Technical College; Chair Finance Committee; Chair Buildings, Property and Transportation; President’s Award for Outstanding Leadership; Outstanding Citizen’s Award for Leadership in the Community – Winnipeg; Past Board Member, Fort Garry Ringette Association; and, President Fort Garry Community Centre.

As a graduate of the University of Manitoba, Faculty of Management (Honours), and an employee with Manitoba Hydro for over 25 years, I have a strong background in employment and training programs, financial and human resource management, and project management that complements my role as School Trustee.

What are some issues that you would like to stand for in your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee), and why are these issues important to you?

My focus is on student success and well-being.  Appropriate class size, use of student assessment data, and monitoring/reporting on outcomes ensures funding (taxation) is allocated to areas where it is needed to improve student outcomes. I will continue to ensure programming is meeting expected outcomes while maintaining the lowest mill rate in Winnipeg.

While our school division has made significant strides towards reducing the number of incidents of bullying in our schools, I believe we can do more.  Maintaining a safe learning environment for all students, and respecting diversity and individual abilities are paramount for a student’s sense of belonging and self-worth.

What is something that you appreciate about the (City of Winnipeg / the ward / the school ward or school division) you wish to represent?

During this campaign, I have been impressed with the positive feedback while visiting with residents throughout our Ward.  There is more work to be done but it is gratifying to know that we are moving in the right direction.   I appreciate being part of a community that cares about what is happening in our schools.

Do you have any other comments regarding your candidacy?

On October 24, 2018, let’s continue working together to build a strong future for our students and our community. It has been an honour to serve the residents of Pembina Trails.  I commit to working hard, with creativity and understanding, to ensure Pembina Trails continues to meet the needs of our students and our community.
