Questionnaire Response
Sandy Lethbridge - St. James - Assiniboia - Kirkfield - St. Charles
Why did you decide to run in the 2018 (Winnipeg Civic Election / School Board Election)?
I am running this year for School Trustee in the Kirkfield-St Charles Ward for the same reasons I first ran in 2010. I want to be the voice of parents in our school division for school administration and school board.
I am emotional, enthusiastic and committed to the role as School Trustee. I am passionate about working with the School Board on all issues and serving my community.
What experience will you bring to complement your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee)?
I am currently the Chair of the Personnel Committee and an active member of the following Ad Hoc Committees including; Education, Marketing, the St James Scholarship Foundation, the Scholarship Committee, and the Early Childhood Education. I was appointed as the Provincial School Boards representative member of the Arts in Education Steering Committee for four years.
These committees have provided me the experience and knowledge to further enable me to do my job as a School Trustee.
What are some issues that you would like to stand for in your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee), and why are these issues important to you?
The issues that I will be paying close attention to:
Becoming more involved in understanding the new Provincial Block Funding for special needs students. Previously the School’s had to complete copious amount of paperwork to ensure children received the necessary funding; now the province provides a “block” of funding to the school divisions and it is determinate on them to allocate the funds to students.
Ensuring the people in the guidance/resource areas in our schools are in fact experienced in that area. There are many items our students are dealing with in and out of school and the proper staff must be in those areas.
Bullying is still an issue in many of our school and we must ensure all students feel safe. More should be done to get across to all students that bullying is not acceptable.
What is something that you appreciate about the (City of Winnipeg / the ward / the school ward or school division) you wish to represent?
I am very excited that St James Assiniboia will be launching a new program, The Peaceful Village Program, will be opening up a new site at George Waters Middle School and St. James Collegiate. The after-school program is focused on achieving individual student goals and offers one-on-one teaching time, group tutoring/mentorship, homework support, passion projects in the arts and athletics and much more.
Do you have any other comments regarding your candidacy?
If re-elected I will continue to represent my constituents as I have been for the last eight years.
