Questionnaire Response

Sam Zurzolo - Pembina Trails - 1

Why did you decide to run in the 2018 (Winnipeg Civic Election / School Board Election)?

I have been a teacher for over ten years. In that time, I have have observed the workings of the school division at the board level. School boards play an important role in the overall education of students in their wards. They allocate the funding and set the Divisions’ focus. The board is a place that sets the overall tone towards parents, students and teachers. I have three children who are in, or will be in schools in Pembina Trails. I want what is best for them, and what is best for all students. We have a great community here and I want to be a part of making its’ schools the best schools in the province.

What experience will you bring to complement your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee)?

I have been working in education for over a decade. I have taught in various schools at all levels. I know what schools look like today, I know what classrooms look like and I have a complete picture of the diverse needs of our students.

What are some issues that you would like to stand for in your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee), and why are these issues important to you?

I believe that schools require collaboration at all levels. Parents, Teachers, Principals, Superintendents and School Trustees have the same job: Ensure quality education for all students. All parties involved need to collaborate and build a environment of Trust with each other, otherwise the students suffer.

What is something that you appreciate about the (City of Winnipeg / the ward / the school ward or school division) you wish to represent?

I appreciate the commitment to community in Charleswood. I have enjoyed walking door to door in the area and having some really great conversations about schools and politics. We have needs that are unique to other communities. The people here have shown a willingness to collaborate. They get involved. They are well informed. It is an honour to be a part of this community.
