Nicole Bowering - St. James - Assiniboia - King Edward - Deer Lodge
Why did you decide to run in the 2018 (Winnipeg Civic Election / School Board Election)?
I am running in this election because I am ready and willing to work hard for our community to ensure a great educational future for our kids and to make sure taxes remain equitable and are used wisely.
My decision to run in the 2018 School Board Election started back in 2015. I had become more and more involved in my child’s school and had started working on divisional efforts surrounding the Golden Gate/Ness Middle School reorganization. After coming in second place in the 2016 School Trustee By-election, I resolved to continue working hard at the school and community levels to effect change at the divisional level in areas of educational programming, transportation and maintenance.
Our division has and continues to go through a number of changes – enrollment is increasing (especially in the French Immersion stream), programming needs are changing and many major decisions will be made in the near future with regards to serving our growing community. As a parent, homeowner and active community member, I want to help make the best choices for our children and community – fully researching each issue, hearing from community members and considering divisional needs.
What experience will you bring to complement your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee)?
First and foremost, I am a parent (and active school volunteer) with three children presently attending school in the division. As such, I am better able to understand how Board decisions impact the day-to-day for our administration, staff and students in our growing and changing division.
Second, with more than 10 years of Board/Council and management experience, I am a proven leader who works well collaboratively and have experience managing organizational operations and finances.
Finally, with more than 15 years experience working with children and youth, including my role as an Employment Facilitator for predominantly at-risk youth, I will have a unique understanding of the challenges facing our students today.
Experience:
-Parent Council Treasurer (and former VP) and Active School Volunteer, École Bannatyne
-Former Board Member, Youth Employment Services Manitoba Board of Directors
-Former Employment Facilitator and High School EA
-Bachelor of Arts Graduate with High Honours
-10 years of board/council experience
-15 years experience working with children and youth
-Advisory Team Member, École Bannatyne Safe & Active Routes to School Committee
-Ongoing work with Division and Trustees to ensure quality educational opportunities for all students
-Management experience working with employees and volunteers
What are some issues that you would like to stand for in your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee), and why are these issues important to you?
I want students across our division to experience a variety of programming to inspire them to become engaged learners. In my experience working with at-risk youth, I’ve seen how early intervention reduces criminal behaviour and substance abuse. Providing students with positive opportunities will foster a safer community as engaged learners become productive citizens. I will work to ensure a safe, welcoming school environment for all students.
As a homeowner, I recognize the need to maintain reasonable taxes. I believe funds can be better managed to meet divisional needs without increasing financial burden to homeowners. I will ensure funds are spent wisely and used effectively to meet these needs and provide measurable outcomes.
I believe we can find the best solutions to meet divisional and community needs when we work collaboratively. To achieve this, I will work to create an active partnership between the division, Trustees and community. I will give community members a voice, ensuring their concerns are heard and considered when making decisions.
Finally, I promise to make all decisions with integrity and transparency – keeping students, staff and our community as my chief focus. I will be available to residents, hearing and representing their thoughts and concerns.
What is something that you appreciate about the (City of Winnipeg / the ward / the school ward or school division) you wish to represent?
I appreciate the warm, diverse and vibrant community in which we live. My husband and I intentionally chose to live in St. James more than 10 years ago in part because of the unique community spirit. I continue to be blown away by the kind, supportive words on the campaign trail as strangers become neighbours and friends. I am thankful for the community spirit that continues to flourish in our schools across the division and the dedicated teachers and staff who promote it, teaching our children the importance of caring for one another.
Do you have any other comments regarding your candidacy?
The role of School Trustee is one of vital importance for the future of our community. Decisions made by Trustees have the power to impact generations of students and community members. I take this role very seriously. I will not make decisions based on a political scale, but I will research issues fully, consult with and listen to community members and consider divisional needs to make the best decision possible for our school division and community. Should I be elected, I promise to work hard for your family and our community. Thank you for your consideration.
