Why did you decide to run in the 2018 (Winnipeg Civic Election / School Board Election)?

What experience will you bring to complement your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee)?

I bring over 20 years of grassroots involvement in our community.  From working with at-risk teenagers in the Fire Escape Drop-in (YFC on Talbot Ave), to coaching at Elmwood High School, serving on the board of the Elmwood Community Resource Centre, the board of the Chalmers Neighbourhood Renewal Corporation, leading a small church, organizing community activities and bringing diverse groups together to solve problems, I have the experience to represent the needs of our community.

13 months of door knocking has further impassioned me to serve and represent us at City Hall.

In my time serving here I have had to work with many diverse groups and individuals which means that I’ve had to learn to listen, stay humble and to find solutions that can only be found when a community pulls together.

I also consider my experience as a husband (22 years married to Christa) and dad (to 4 amazing children) to be key in my growth and development as a leader. I commit to serving them and all of Elmwood-EK if elected to City Council.

What are some issues that you would like to stand for in your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee), and why are these issues important to you?

1. Roads and infrastructure. As a city, the growth of mature neighbourhoods is critical to the sustainability of growth at the periphery. By fixing roads and doing the necessary upgrades to other infrastructure we set the stage for better infill housing, more houses being renovated which improves the value of homes, increases the tax revenue and decreases the strain on the suburbs to fund the growth of the city.
2. A walkable community. This builds on roads and infrastructure but focuses more on our experience as residents in our our own neighbourhood. It addresses feelings of belonging and safety.
   Walkability is a measurement of how conducive a place is to walking.  Some questions we might ask: Does it feel safe? Can I do simple errands? Is it beautiful? Are the sidewalks smooth, cleared of snow? Is it well lit?  Are there others out? Unfortunately, many times we cannot answer these questions positively. We can and we are making small changes that will add up.
3. Crime and Safety. Though it is part of walkability, we need to have an immediate strategy to deal with the meth crisis. Open a meth detox facility quickly.

What is something that you appreciate about the (City of Winnipeg / the ward / the school ward or school division) you wish to represent?

I came because I could afford it here and I stay because I love the people and what is happening here. We have momentum and growth in our community organizations and in our families. Many residents are choosing to make this community their life long home.

In the months of door knocking and meeting many of you at your homes my love for our community has grown. I love the passion you have for our streets, our youth, our schools & the growth of our community. I love our generosity and hospitality. I love the diversity of culture, sport, arts, religion and even political perspectives.
