Matt Allard - St. Boniface
Why did you decide to run in the 2018 (Winnipeg Civic Election / School Board Election)?
I am a St. Boniface man through and through: I grew up, live, work, and volunteer in St. Boniface. I believe I am well placed to continue the work of building this community I’ve helping lead since 2014.
What experience will you bring to complement your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee)?
Prior to being a City Councillor, I was small business owner and CEO of the Francophone Chamber of Commerce of St. Boniface. I worked with many community groups and initiatives : as President of the Old St. Boniface Résidents Association. I hold a Masters degree in Public Administration from the University of Manitoba and the University of Winnipeg.
What are some issues that you would like to stand for in your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee), and why are these issues important to you?
Since taking office, as Councillor, I have been energetic in pursuing investment in my ward, from road repair, to parks, to the signature Promenade Tache riverwalk project in partnership with the Winnipeg Foundation. I believe strongly in the need for urban density and infill, to make the City more financially sustainable, and foster dynamic and thriving neighbourhood main streets. I am a daily user of Winnipeg Transit and a passionate believer, defender and promoter of transit service.
What is something that you appreciate about the (City of Winnipeg / the ward / the school ward or school division) you wish to represent?
St Boniface is a unique and special community in Winnipeg. It’s history, culture and Francophone character is not just a jewel of Winnipeg, but holds a unique place in all of Canada.
Do you have any other comments regarding your candidacy?
St Boniface is in many ways a city of its own. It has urban and suburban character, a diverse population, university, hospital, two major language groups and other features of a large standalone community. Representation of this neighbourhood requires a sense of balance, pragmatism, open mindedness and commitment to its growth and prosperity.
