Questionnaire Response

Kelly Legaspi - Seven Oaks - 2

Why did you decide to run in the 2018 (Winnipeg Civic Election / School Board Election)?

I decided to run in the 2018 School Board Election because I care for the future leaders of our community, I care for the educators who are the instruments in developing our future leaders.

I have been a resident of the Seven Oaks School Division for 15 years. Me and my husband raised our kids in this area and all 4 attended public schools within the catchment. Our family owns a non-profit organization & martial arts school, The Winnipeg Sikaran Arnis Academy, where I am blessed to be a part of the growth and lives of a few dozens more.

I am a strong advocate of putting the students needs first and will strive to strengthen our School Division by working in a more integrated way by forging strong connections with the community to identify its needs like having an affordable Child Care Center withing our Division that will operate extended hours helping parents who are working different shifts.

I will ensure that resources are properly allocated which will impact the development of our students and their learning environment.

What experience will you bring to complement your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee)?

I am a registered nurse by profession,a vocation of caring and service for others.

A 4th degree black belt, which I earned through hardwork, diligence, & passion.

I am an active volunteer and SERVANT of the community and many multicultural programs and festivities.

Through the years, I have been a community volunteer & servant;

  •  Secretary & BOD of the Filipino Seniors Group of Winnipeg
  • Mentor & resource speaker for the Internationally Educated Nurses in MB & a Clinical Instructor for Senior Nurses at SOGH, Community Health Nurses and U of M.
  • Former VP – Philippine Nurses Association of MB and Philippine Canadian Centre of MB
  •  Speaker for ESL at the Seven Oaks Adult Learning Centre, Winnipeg Technological Colleges and Immigration Matters Canada
  • Folkolorama, Cancer Care’s  Challenge for Life, Asian Heritage Celebration, the MB Filipino Street Festival etc.
  • Program Coordinator for Citizenship Ceremonies and
  • Multiculturalism for the Canadian Citizenship and Immigration Services

What are some issues that you would like to stand for in your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee), and why are these issues important to you?

I will ensure a safe environment for the residents of our community in general and the specifically the students  by exploring on the possibility of putting a more visible 30 km school zone street sign, like having a flashing light on those signs to give the drivers a reminder of the School Zone and developing “Safe Walks” where schools will organize students to walk to and from their schools as a group.

What is something that you appreciate about the (City of Winnipeg / the ward / the school ward or school division) you wish to represent?

I appreciate that education is equally available to all as it is the foundation of the development of our children. As a resident of the Division, I am very proud of its diversity and multiculturalism hence our children are growing with awareness of the different cultures in our community. I am proud that our community and our School Division is strong and it is flourishing. I would like to see it stronger and better as our population is growing bigger.

Do you have any other comments regarding your candidacy?

I have the skills, knowledge, experience, passion and a strong and valuable trustee caring for the future leaders of our community.

As a mother, a nurse, an educator, a martial artist, a sports enthusiast, a performing artist and a volunteer, I bring forth knowledge and skills based on experience.
