Questionnaire Response

Josh Brandon - Daniel McIntyre

Why did you decide to run in the 2018 (Winnipeg Civic Election / School Board Election)?

I to want build a more socially just and environmentally friendly city. I believe:

  • Winnipeg needs affordable, reliable transit and excellent cycling routes that connect all our neighbourhoods, not more sprawl and car-oriented infrastructure
  • We need to invest in community-based safety programs, not corporate welfare for wealthy developers
  • Winnipeg should become a leader in making all city jobs pay a living wage of at least $15 per hour, not supporting contracting out to the lowest bidder, regardless of working conditions or wage standards.
  • We need a safe community that offers quality services to all residents, regardless of ethnic origin or citizenship

I believe as an experienced social justice and environmental leader I can provide a fresh voice to city council and will help implement priorities important to the residents of Daniel McIntyre.

What experience will you bring to complement your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee)?

I am a social justice advocate, anti-poverty organizer, environmentalist, and enthusiastic Winnipegger. I am a community organizer at the Social Planning Council of Winnipeg, and former chair of Make Poverty History Manitoba.

I am a leader in working for a just and environmentally sustainable community:

  • Campaigned to stop 25 cent bus fare increases and service reductions in 2017
  • As chair of Make Poverty History Manitoba, I worked with community allies to get the Rent Assist program implemented in 2015, making housing more affordable for thousands of low income families
  • Started a coalition to reduce pesticides use resulting in Manitoba cosmetic pesticide use regulation in 2014, protecting the health of children pets and the environment
  • Led Manitoba Eco-Network water caucus fighting for better water quality in Manitoba lakes and rivers; helped push to pass the Save Lake Winnipeg Act in 2011.

I am a research associate with the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives. I co-edited Poor Housing: a Silent Crisis, a book on low-income housing in Winnipeg published by Fernwood Publishing in 2015. He has a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Simon Fraser University.

What are some issues that you would like to stand for in your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee), and why are these issues important to you?

I want to build a greener, more just city. Everything the city does has impacts on working families, including those who are struggling to get by.  Before pouring millions into new roads and other infrastructure that primarily benefit suburban developers, we must consider how poor bus service and fare increases affect those who can’t afford to get to work. Instead of putting organic materials into landfills, we should adopt a long-term vision how our waste contributes to climate change. Rather than offloading our city’s fiscal shortfalls onto the most marginalized members of our community, we can re-focus municipal resources to create good jobs and grow our economy to make it work for everyone.

If elected I will work to ensure we have:

  1. Well-maintained streets and sidewalks that are accessible for everyone
    CAA survey on infrastructure
  2. Affordable reliable transit that is comfortable and sustainable
    – Read backgrounder
    Low income bus pass
  3. A citywide bike network with protected bike lanes

  4. High-quality city jobs that pay a living wage

  5. Safe communities where every family can access the city services they need
    – Read backgrounder on Community Safety Fund
    – Read my responses to Migrant Solidarity Network on “Access Without Fear Survey”

What is something that you appreciate about the (City of Winnipeg / the ward / the school ward or school division) you wish to represent?

From strolling down Sargent enjoying the shops and restaurants to cycling down the leafy streets of Westminster or Wolseley, Daniel Mac has the best neighbourhoods in Winnipeg -but with sustained public investment it could be even better. Most of all I appreciate the people.  We have a long history in Daniel McIntyre of working towards building up our communities and working for a better world.
