Questionnaire Response

Jay Myshkowsky - Louis Riel - 4

Why did you decide to run in the 2018 (Winnipeg Civic Election / School Board Election)?

OVERCROWDING

The current leadership has failed our families. The two incumbents have had their roles for  many decades, and still we have huge issues around overcrowding and transporting our kids to and from school.

It’s time for a change. In 4 years three schools will be over capacity. In 10 years ALL schools in the LRSD will be full. We need classrooms and we need them fast. I am a fixer, I get things done,

We need meal programs in all schools. Fed stomachs increase performance. Too many kids are failing due to poor nutrition at home.

Staff Wellness: I want to make sure that when our teachers, EA’s, and school admin go home at night that they are healthy and happy to be productive in their homes.

What experience will you bring to complement your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee)?

I am involved. Currently I am a board member of a charity through the LRSD to raise money for after school programs. I coach multiple sports in the community, and I am a past board member at Southdale CC. My wife is a teacher in the division and I have 2 kids who attend school in the division. I have lived 38 of my 47 years in St Vital or St Boniface, and I am a graduate of the St Vital School Division, GO LANCERS!!!

Bottom line is I accomplish what I set out to do, and right now we need classrooms and we need them fast. We can’t wait while our two incumbents dither.

What are some issues that you would like to stand for in your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee), and why are these issues important to you?

Overcrowding – our leadership in Ward 4 has been completely ineffective in building classrooms for our children, and in doing so has caused untold stress and anxiety for the families in this Ward. We can’t wait 4 more years to correct their inaction. We need classrooms and we need them yesterday. I have a kid in grade 3 and I am not sure where he will be going to high school. There is no communication or plan that I see from the current Ward 4 trustees.

Food Security – Many kids do not get proper nutrition at home, we need to make sure the kids get a healthy breakfast at least. Students achieve more with proper nutrition.

Staff Wellness –  Every issue in a family/community hits the classroom. Every one of those takes a little but out of the school staff. I want to make sure we are taking care of our staff, so that when they go home they can be a productive parent/spouse/partner to their families.

Charity – I will donate 10% of whatever compensation a trustee gets to RIEL EVATE a LRSD charity.

What is something that you appreciate about the (City of Winnipeg / the ward / the school ward or school division) you wish to represent?

Our teachers, staff, and school administration are doing an amazing job with the resources they are given. We have teachers, staff, and admin that love our children. But, we can do more for those people, We can help them make a greater impact on our children.  I grew up in a low income household, and I can appreciate a dollar. I want to make sure all of your $’s gets to the children and not gobbled up by waste.

Do you have any other comments regarding your candidacy?

I am the best person for the job today. Today we need classrooms, our schools are overcrowded and I am the best one to get that resolved. I will work tirelessly to get classrooms built. I am the only candidate that has talked about overcrowding from day one. I understood the issues from the first instance. I get it.

It is hard to beat an incumbent. It is a good gig for them. They live off the re-elect check mark because School Trustee flies under the radar for most households and they are unaware at what poor representation they really have. I just hope enough people know that the issues are at a critical stage and we deserve better as a community.
