Questionnaire Response

Jason Crampton - River East - Transcona - 3

Why did you decide to run in the 2018 (Winnipeg Civic Election / School Board Election)?

I decide to run for school trustee for a number of reasons. I primarily wanted to make a positive change in the school system and how it is operating.  I know from my many interactions with parents and teachers that there are a number of issues that are facing the school system which require leadership in order to face them. I was raised in a family that encouraged and participated in community organizations and after many years of volunteering it was time to use my experience, community involvement, and networks as an elected trustee.

What experience will you bring to complement your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee)?

I have been employed for a number of years in the federal Public Service in the Public Safety portfolio. Since school safety and bullying is the biggest issue in the ward I am well versed in solutions to this issue. Earlier in my career I was a manager in a group home for youth with intellectual and physical disability and I understand the challenges of integrating these individuals within the school system. I am also the shop steward for my union and have insights on the complexities of a unionized workplace.

What are some issues that you would like to stand for in your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee), and why are these issues important to you?

I have heard many parents and students share their stories of how they were bullied in the school system. These shared stories came throughout the ward, no matter the family circumstance. This is one issue that I will be tackling head on.

I would also like the school system to be more flexible in accommodating before and after school programs which would allow parents, especially those in which both parents work, options and flexibility in balance their family lives.

As school funding comes under more pressure and tax burdens at different levels continue to increase we will need to find a willingness to be more innovative and flexible in how our education programs are delivered while maintaining a high standard.

What is something that you appreciate about the (City of Winnipeg / the ward / the school ward or school division) you wish to represent?

Throughout my campaign I have been impressed and appreciate the questions, commitment and passion to making our school system better that people have expressed to me while going campaigning.
