Why did you decide to run in the 2018 (Winnipeg Civic Election / School Board Election)?

I decided to run for re-election because I continue to believe strongly that a child’s education is paramount in helping to shape their future. As a mom and a longstanding community volunteer, I truly care about our children and I am deeply committed to strengthening our schools and ensuring the highest quality of education possible through innovative and fiscally responsible ways.

What experience will you bring to complement your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee)?

As a School Trustee, I have proven to be a well-organized, budget-conscious, leader and problem-solver. Some of the skills and experience that I bring with me from my job as a manager for a Crown corporation include the following:

• A collaborative approach – working together to resolve issues
• Experience in strategic and business planning, budgeting and staff management
• Demonstrated competence in team work and leadership skills
• Strong communications and dedication to community engagement

What are some issues that you would like to stand for in your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee), and why are these issues important to you?

The principles that guide me in my role as School Trustee include the following:

1. Quality Education:  I am committed to ensuring we deliver the best possible education for our students, in a fiscally responsible manner.
2. Engaging 21st Century Learners:  As a parent, I tell my daughters that it is my job to ensure they are nurtured – mind, body and spirit, so that they can realise their full potential. I believe that the programs and policies that we set at the Board level need to ensure that our school system similarly cultivates our students, while also demonstrating a commitment to 21st Century Learning. This also includes the overall safety and well-being of our students and staff and their learning and working environment.
3. Communication and Community Engagement:  I strive to ensure open and honest communication with the staff, parents and residents in my ward. When making decisions, I always consider different points of view and perspectives from various stakeholder groups.

What is something that you appreciate about the (City of Winnipeg / the ward / the school ward or school division) you wish to represent?

There are many reasons that I am proud to be part of the Pembina Trails School Division. I appreciate our dedication to tracking and reporting on student success.  I appreciate our efforts to be innovative and to introduce new initiatives like the Alternative High School, PTEC (Pembina Trails Early College) and the Standards for Success in Literacy.  I acknowledge that none of these things would be possible without our staff (teaching and non-teaching) and administration, and I very much appreciate their commitment and hard work.  Overall, I appreciate being part of a Division that strives to continually improve on its strengths and, perhaps more importantly, its weaknesses.

Do you have any other comments regarding your candidacy?

I live in Charleswood with my husband, Chris Fedorchuk, and my two daughters, Addison (a student at École Charleswood School) and Grae (a student at École Dieppe).  I am committed to our community – to the students, parents, staff and taxpayers.  There will be challenges and issues that we will face as a ward and as a Division.  Through it all I will listen and consider the community’s perspective and will continue to work to keep you informed and engaged.  As your School Trustee, I welcome your feedback and look forward to developing the future generation, together.
