Questionnaire Response

Gary Nelson - Seine River - 1

Why did you decide to run in the 2018 (Winnipeg Civic Election / School Board Election)?

I have represented my community on the Seine River Board for over 25 years. I am proud of the work I have done as a Trustee and with what this Board has accomplished. The current trustees of Seine River have built a great culture around our Board table and in our schools. I have the experience, passion and determination to continue to contribute positively and effectively, on behalf of this community, at the Board table.

What experience will you bring to complement your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee)?

My 25 plus  years as a member of the Seine River School Board is certainly a valuable asset at the Board table. As a trustee I have served in the capacity as Vice-chair on the Board and also Chaired a Provincial Labour Relations Committee for the then Manitoba Association of School Boards. Those years has given me an understanding of the needs for a strong public education system. I am also a parent; my wife Sharon and I raised three children, all of whom attended school in La Salle and St Norbert. In my other career I am a labour relations professional and have acted on behalf of labour, management and government in that capacity. I have a background in adult education. I have also been a resident of my ward (St Norbert/LaSalle) for 31 years so I know the needs and expectations of those communities when it comes to the education of their children.

What are some issues that you would like to stand for in your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee), and why are these issues important to you?

Ensuring our children have a safe  place to learn in a positive learning environment. That our schools have the human and material resources necessary to allow our children to achieve success. That we ensure equity in learning opportunities for our children by illuminating systemic barriers.

We have eliminated most student fees in our schools. We now provide all grade 6 students with an IPad to keep and  to use  as an educational tool in their schooling. This past year I tabled a motion that carried unanimously, to have the division provide musical instruments for middle years students rather than parents having to supply the instrument. A child’s education should not be compromised  because of a families ability to pay.

I want to ensure that the Seine River School Division continues to be innovative its approach to education and ensures equity for all of the students in our schools.

What is something that you appreciate about the (City of Winnipeg / the ward / the school ward or school division) you wish to represent?

I am proud of the culture that exists in Seine River. I believe we are one of the most progressive School Divisions in the Province. We commence each Board meeting with a reminder of why we are here. The Boards invocation is as follows;

“Help us begin this meeting in an atmosphere of respect and trust. May we always communicate in a manner that will allow us to serve our communities openly and with pride, always demonstrating the highest respect for the students and staff of our Division.”

I believe we demonstrate those words in everything we do. Our Board works as a team to ensure our students get every opportunity to succeed and develop into literate, innovative and socially responsible citizens. We have a collaborative and trusting relationship with our staff and the unions that represent them. We actively engage with the parents of the children in our schools and ensure our Parent Advisory Committees have Trustees regularly attending their meetings to hear about their concerns and to report on what is happening at the Board table.

I am proud of the Seine River school Division and the contributions made by my fellow Trustees and the Division staff.

Do you have any other comments regarding your candidacy?
