Questionnaire Response

Darcy Collignon - Louis Riel - 4

Why did you decide to run in the 2018 (Winnipeg Civic Election / School Board Election)?

I am a proud husband and father to two children who are students in the Louis Riel
School Division (LRSD). My children have allowed me to gain and pursue a strong passion for the
community. I believe education is not just what happens in the classroom but a passion and curiosity that should
be part of every aspect of one’s life.  My desire to runt for School Trustee is towards continued improvement in numeracy, literacy and inclusivity.

One of my core objectives is to engage LRSD constituents to better prepare our future leaders
of tomorrow while improving the student experience. I have a strong belief that “community and
schools have a synergistic relationship and the school trustee of today must be able to bring them
together to have a positive student outcome.”

What experience will you bring to complement your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee)?

Over the last 20 years I have had the privilege to work in the high paced medical field.  During this time prioritization of tasks and time management have been key tactics of my every day job and is ideally suited for the school trustee roll.  My strong sense of ownership, experience with governance and strategic negotiations skills have me well prepared to represent the constituents of Ward 4.

What are some issues that you would like to stand for in your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee), and why are these issues important to you?

Ward 4 is experiencing all time Community Growth which is ideal but negatively affects education if not dealt with properly.  As we have seen in Ecole Sage Creek, JH Bruns, Belliveau, Ecole Van Bellingham and other schools in Ward 4 the population growth is leading to physical space issues in our schools.  The issue is further compounded as space shortage leads to erosion of our community as kids are being transported to alternative schools.  Whilst the priority of our Schools is directed to education of students the aforementioned takes away from Literacy and Numeracy discussions. Addressing class size, proper space for services and programs is currently discussed at LRSD but we need to improve in Ward 4.

As to transportation issues, there is room for significant improvement in Ward 4.  Be it Elementary School, Middle Years or High School the current transportation system is broken.  Multiple bus transfers, extended travel times, long bus stop waiting times are prevalent in Ward 4 for our High School Students.  As for “Yellow Busses” there are endless issues and this area of transportation also requires evaluation.

What is something that you appreciate about the (City of Winnipeg / the ward / the school ward or school division) you wish to represent?

Ward 4 is an absolutely wonderful neighborhood filled with walking paths, parks and lakes.  It is a lively area filled with a sense of community.  I’m proud to reside in the Ward as it has all the things to offer growing families and established residents.  The LRSD is a flag ship division and our reputation is known nationally.  Being part of a progressive evolving neighborhood gives me a great sense of Winnipeg Pride.
