Questionnaire Response

Corey Burgess - Pembina Trails - 1

Why did you decide to run in the 2018 (Winnipeg Civic Election / School Board Election)?

Everyone asks, “Why do you want to be our school trustee?”

It is simple, I am a parent and a tax payer.

I want a quality education for our future leaders. They need to be prepared for the responsibility. I want our teachers to be properly supported to deliver on that vision. I want equitable access to tools, resources and programs. I want good value for our money.

I am a father of two wonderful kids. My wife and I work hard to support our family. We bought a house, carefully picked a school that had an integrated daycare that met our standards. We fought hard for 2 years to get spots for our children in that daycare.

I have been attending School Board meetings, Parent Advisory groups and emailing my trustees. I was disappointed by the a culture of only having meaningful debate behind closed doors. School administrators who insulated from direct correspondence with parents. I was disappointed by Trustees who make decisions without requiring meaningful consultation or impact assessments.

What I experienced drew me to the conclusion, I need to be at that table. Meaningful change will only come from within the board.

Sincerely,

Corey Burgess

What experience will you bring to complement your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee)?

Why Me?

I am passionate about ensuring a quality, equitable education for all  our children and grand children. I am a public servant with two decades of experience in community development and program administration. I’ve worked in and around schools all my life. I’ve served on national and provincial policy committees. I’ve been elected to several board. I’ve administered grants and managed projects.

Everyone has different talents and abilities. My talents are collaboration, listening, critical thinking and creative problem solving.

Give me a chance to go to work for you. Please give me your advice, input and your vote.

What are some issues that you would like to stand for in your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee), and why are these issues important to you?

I have three commitments this election;
  i) Keep Students and Families first.
 ii) Control costs
iii) Place schools as part of an integrated team of supports for children, families and communities.
