Questionnaire Response

Christine Brouzes - Winnipeg - 8

Why did you decide to run in the 2018 (Winnipeg Civic Election / School Board Election)?

I decided to run for 2018 school trustee to work.

I want to work to make our school safe.

I want to work to see our students graduate as smart, kind and happy community members.

I want to work to see students with special needs supported and their parents to be heard.

I’m excited.  I’m friendly. I’m confident. I want to talk with you and have you be heard.

What experience will you bring to complement your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee)?

You may know me from media stories around a non-profit group that I run.  The group focuses on safety for women.

You may not know that my full time job for over twenty years has been supporting students and their families. As a family service worker, I know the schools, I am in each of them. I meet with daycares, teachers, principals and education assistants to advocate for students who have special needs.  I connect families with supports.

  • 20 year civil servant with the department of families
  • director at Ikwe Safe Rides
  • Board member with Inspire Community Outreach
  • Advisory member with the City’s transportation counsel
  • Past Red River Instructor
  • Past Early Childhood Educator
  • MMIWG lead facilitator at national round table
  • Past parent advisory member at YM-YWCA Creative Play daycare
  • Best of all I’m a mom and a wife and a lover of diversity!

What are some issues that you would like to stand for in your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee), and why are these issues important to you?

I want to support the issues of our division and our unique needs.  I encourage parents to share their concerns and suggestions with me.

  • Safety first – Review of student and staff safety policies in the school division to prepare for unexpected situations.
  • Expand Early Childhood Education – Expand our full day kindergarten/nursery program by adding more schools.
  • Special Needs parent support– Create an Advocate Office for Parents of Students with Special Needs to help navigate the WSD to ensure each child gets the supports they need. Create a public Task Force to review the current programming needs for Special Education in the Division.
  • Active Transportation – Expand the “Walking School Bus” program – get students to and from school safely.
  • Change the Tax System – Lobby the Provincial government for a change in how the Public School system is funded with less reliance on property taxation

What is something that you appreciate about the (City of Winnipeg / the ward / the school ward or school division) you wish to represent?

I love it! I appreciate the diversity, the friendly people and the spirit of ward 8! This is the heart of the city and where I want to be Trustee.  There are issues, but the good people of this community shine brighter than the challenges.

We can be safer.  We can educate children to be smart and kind graduates.  Lets find the way to do this together. I’m listening.

I look forward to working as Ward 8’s school Trustee.
