Questionnaire Response

Betty Edel - Winnipeg - 8

Why did you decide to run in the 2018 (Winnipeg Civic Election / School Board Election)?

I am running for School Board Trustee in the WSD Ward 8 because I know from first hand experience what an education can do to change your life from thinking of survival only to thriving and being part of a community. I have seen over the many years that I have volunteered and worked in the community, the difference an education can make with a person, in their family and in the community. I know that the schools cannot do everything on their own, there are many wonderful organizations working in the community with children, youth and families. We need to bring our knowledge, skills and wisdom to the table and work with each other to contribute to healthy families and communities.

What experience will you bring to complement your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee)?

I have worked in the North End of Winnipeg for all my life, including:

  • Program Manager – Ma Mawi Wi Chi Itata Centre Inc
  • Executive Director – Mount Carmel Clinic
  • Co-Director – Community Education Development Association
  • Community Development Worker – Hope Centre Health Care
  • Teacher’s Aide – Strathcona School – nursery to grade 6
  • Team Lead – Strathcona Summer School

One of the founding members at:

  • SPLASH Child Care
  • North End Housing Project
  • North End Community Renewal Corporation

Past Board Member

  • Andrews Street Family Centre
  • Winnipeg Regional Health Authority
  • Ma Mawi Wi Chi Itata Centre

Current Board Member:

  • Ndinawemaaganag Endaawaad – Chair
  • Community Education Development Association – Co-Chair

What are some issues that you would like to stand for in your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee), and why are these issues important to you?

Everybody’s Voice Counts if we want to improve the quality of education in our schools. I was one of the community residents that worked to get smaller wards so that school trustees could better get to know local residents. I will hold regular community forums in order that parents and residents can have a say about their priorities regarding school board issues.

On Early Years Education Schools need to support young children and families To Get a Head Start in their education journey. I will support the expansion of early years programs by working in partnership with schools, childcare centres, parent child centres and early childhood programs for families in our community.

On Community School Partnerships Schools cannot provide quality education for our children on their own. I will work with community partners to Improve High School Graduation rates through a range of initiatives including after school tutoring programs, mentoring programs, off-campus programs handsomer school programs.

Adult Education and Training I will support the expansion of Community Based Adult Education Programs in local schools and partnerships with community training programs that support parents to upgrade their education and employment skills.

What is something that you appreciate about the (City of Winnipeg / the ward / the school ward or school division) you wish to represent?

I appreciate the diversity in my community, the ability to see the world from a different lens and grow as a person. I appreciate the opportunity to volunteer in organizations, it is a time to share the lessons that life has given to me and to learn new lessons. I appreciate that when people in the community see that something is not working out, that someone steps up and organizes something to bring attention to the concern and get people involved in creating a solution.

I love that having knocked on many doors, that people are interested and welcoming to people who are introducing themselves as a candidate.
