Questionnaire Response

Andrew Harder - Pembina Trails - 2

Why did you decide to run in the 2018 (Winnipeg Civic Election / School Board Election)?

I decided to run for trustee because I am invested in our children’s future.  I have 2 young children who attend a Pembina Trails School and I want to affect change in a positive way.  I want to make sure all students have the proper resources to compete and thrive in an ever-changing technological world.  The status quo is not good enough.  We have incumbents who have been in office for way too long.  We need fresh ideas, fresh voices and someone who will advocate for smaller class sizes, increased funding for STEM programs (science, technology, engineering and math) and lobbying the government to not raise our school taxes every year.  I am running to give the parents a voice, to make sure that their concerns are brought to the table.

What experience will you bring to complement your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee)?

I have been an educator for 18 years.  I know how the system works.  I know what teachers need and want.  Teachers and staff need to be treated fairly and be given the necessary tools to continue the amazing jobs that they already do.  I have sat on various boards and committees and have degrees in both economics and education.  I understand the need for fiscal responsibility.  I am an active volunteer coach in the community and I know the parents and I know their concerns.  I hope to give them a voice.  Our teachers’ concerns cannot be brushed aside.  They know the students and what it takes for them to be successful.

What are some issues that you would like to stand for in your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee), and why are these issues important to you?

We need smaller class sizes, we need to make sure we are promoting and fostering learning at all levels.  The students need to feel safe and secure.  We need more computer labs.  I will stand for keeping our school taxes in line and that we are fiscally responsible with spending.  I want to provide a voice for parents, teachers, staff who may feel frustrated, overwhelmed etc.
