Questionnaire Response

Alex Allard - Transcona

Why did you decide to run in the 2018 (Winnipeg Civic Election / School Board Election)?

I’m invested in my community. Being a long time resident of Transcona, my concerns were mirrored by concerns brought forward by friends and neighbours.  I spent some time reviewing the credentials of the other candidates and didn’t feel confident moving forward in providing them with my support.  Therefore after considerable consideration and with the full support of my family, I decided to submit my candidacy.

I considered the commitment necessary to fulfilling the position of city councillor.  After networking with the people of Transcona throughout the years, either through my volunteer work or career, I knew I could meet the challenge of re-entering the public service field once again to make a difference.

What experience will you bring to complement your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee)?

Being a retired Winnipeg Police Officer, I worked closely with community members and groups through crime prevention and crime awareness.  Winnipeg has been experiencing an increase in crime for several years.  I intend to use my experience in this field in order to educate and bridge a gap between community members and our police service in an attempt to reduce victimization.

I also bring forward several years experience in the home building industry.  My intention is to use my experience and knowledge in this background to alleviate the confusion in the application process at City Hall.

What are some issues that you would like to stand for in your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee), and why are these issues important to you?

Traffic flow in and out of our community is a concern for many residents in Transcona.  This needs to be addressed as our community is expanding but yet our accessibility is not.  We must provide better movement of traffic and I fully believe with the construction of the Chief Peguis Trail eastbound; the Marion/Archibald underpass; and/or the reconstruction of the Louise Bridge would provide this.

Crime is at an all time high.  We must concentrate on crime awareness and crime prevention to our citizens in order to help in alleviating the chance of being victimized.  I also live in this community and I strongly believe it’s important for all members to feel safe and secure in their surroundings.

Accessibility to health care is at the forefront due to the impending closure of Concordia Hospital emergency room.  At this point, with the closure there are no plans of other alternative care as in an Urgent Care Centre.  Therefore leaving the people of Transcona with no access to local medical emergency care.

What is something that you appreciate about the (City of Winnipeg / the ward / the school ward or school division) you wish to represent?

Being a resident of Transcona for over 35 years, this is home for me and my family.  My children and grandchildren also live in this community.  There is everything you need here – it’s like a town on it’s own.

The cost of property and taxes are attractive for people to relocate into Transcona.  Once here, people comment on how you really don’t have to leave if you don’t want to.  We have all the essential services required to satisfy our needs.
