Questionnaire Response

Adam Burkowski - River East - Transcona - 1

Why did you decide to run in the 2018 (Winnipeg Civic Election / School Board Election)?

I am running because I’m eager to have a voice in shaping the education of my family and my community.  I’m the father of 3 boys currently enrolled in the division – in Kindergarten, Grade 1 and Grade 3, and being involved in such a highly impactful facet of their development could not be more important to me.  We carefully evaluate the people we let babysit our children, and the daycares we leave them with, but we send them to school absent that same level of control.

I would like to help making sure that people who are hired are right for the job, that the lessons being taught prepare them for their future, and that the environment supports and empowers them.  Being chosen by the community to dedicate myself to achieving this would be an honor.

What experience will you bring to complement your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee)?

My professional career has involved over a decade in a senior intelligence analyst role within a large corporation, where I’ve collaborated in a cross functional capacity with all areas of the company, including finance, marketing and regulatory.  Some of my greatest strengths have been in understanding client needs, deriving concise answers from complex sets of data, and not settling on ‘good enough’.

I have been involved in countless projects, where I’ve become proficient at working within a team to achieve greater goals, ranging from customer segmentation to corporate takeovers.

I completed my education at the University of Manitoba, where I received my Bachelor of Commerce, majoring in Finance & Marketing.  I believe my training in both financial balance sheets and delivering what the customer wants/needs will give me a head start in my development as a Trustee.  While I don’t have the background in education that my fellow candidates offer, I can bring my perspective as a parent of children currently in our schools.  The journey as a Trustee begins with a first step, and with at least 3 incumbents returning to the role on the RETSD board, I’d be excited to learn from them.

What are some issues that you would like to stand for in your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee), and why are these issues important to you?

There are so many areas of interest that fall under the scope of the role, but there are a couple program related ones that were part of my motivation to run.

I see the pace of the world’s change continually quickening, and want to ensure that our curriculum adapts.  Soon Artificial Intelligence and Automation will redraw our roles within many industry segments, emphasizing the need for technological savvy and experience.  This is why I’m so interested in seeing the STEM (Science Technology Engineering Mathematics) curriculum supported within our schools, challenging the students in these areas.  It gives them an invaluable jump start into their next phase of life, whether it’s the job market or secondary education.

I would also like more attention on education of mental health in our schools.  It plays a part in many issues, including bullying, addiction, depression & isolation.  Teaching students more about what they could be experiencing, what it means, and what they could do next is invaluable.  I’ve witnessed school friends struggle to right themselves later in life, and would have benefited from support earlier in life.  I’d like to ensure that all our children don’t have to face the same battles.

What is something that you appreciate about the (City of Winnipeg / the ward / the school ward or school division) you wish to represent?

One of the best things about Transcona is the pride in community that you see and feel everywhere.  From the “Hi Neighbour” festival, to the “Transcona, And Proud Of It” Facebook group, it’s never hard to find someone eager to wear their community on their sleeve, and rightfully so!  Whether they’re mowing the lawn of someone who’s unable, or taking pictures of and sharing stories of the community and its character, or being especially passionate about the youth hockey program, there’s always someone who impresses me daily.

Overall, it’s a great, salt of the earth community, and I’d be proud to be given the opportunity to contribute to it as Trustee.
