Why did you decide to run in the 2018 (Winnipeg Civic Election / School Board Election)?

I decided to run for school trustee because I am passionate about education,  my community, and making a difference. Back in 2013 I worked with the board to get a service dog policy in place that respects the human rights code. In September when my son and his service dog started middle school I was thrilled to learn there are many service dog teams throughout the division now! As a special needs mom and an education assistant I’ve seen first hand how students can thrive when they have the proper support. I want to continue to be the voice for all the students, especially the ones who can’t always speak for themselves.

What experience will you bring to complement your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee)?

I bring lot of experience as a mom, advocate and education assistant.

My children are in grade 8, grade 6 and preschool. I’ve been a part of parent council since my 13 year old daughter was in preschool.  I’ve been to so many IEP meetings that friends will often call me to help them prepare and or attend their children’s IEP.

I’ve worked in high schools, middle schools and even kindergarten!

What are some issues that you would like to stand for in your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee), and why are these issues important to you?

I would definitely continue advocating for services such as Physiotherapy,  speech language pathology, occupational therapy,  counseling and all the other service that seem to be continually cut in our division.

I’d also advocate for finding ways to work within the budget without increasing taxes.

I would stand for all the issues that are important to the people in my ridding because that is what a school trustee is elected to do! I’d  also be accountable to my community by keeping updates on social media. I love following some of the trustees in Winnipeg School Division on Facebook, but have been lacking that connection with the SJSD incumbents.

What is something that you appreciate about the (City of Winnipeg / the ward / the school ward or school division) you wish to represent?

As a parent, especially to a student with special needs I really appreciate the time, effort, and passion that our school teams put into our children.

I really appreciate our school community and how kind and compassionate our students can be!

I appreciate the school board incumbents and all the time they volunteer to make policies to better our kids education to the best or their ability.
